Welcome To The Global Sports Coaching Tennis Journal!

The Global Web site for Tennis Coaching!

Dear Tennis Enthusiast

Issue 14, August 2007
Welcome to August's Newsletter - as we prepare for the US Open the Serbian challenge to world tennis domination continues with the superb performances of Novak Djokovic, Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic
.  All three are major contenders for their first grand slam title after strong recent results in the lead up US hard court season.

To see these young Serbian's succeed is quite amazing given their country has limited tennis infrastructure and a tragic recent past.  Considering the money being poured into tennis by the Australian, English and American federations to find the next champions, these three are prime example of hard work and determination triumphing in the face of adversity.

The emergence of players from Eastern Europe and South America raises the issue of player development.  Many of these players may not have had the opportunities and support offered to Australian, US and English players by their national federations; and therefore must toughen up at a young age - developing fighting spirit and competitive instincts that are crucial once they hit the cut throat senior tour.

Tennis Australia is one organisation that have made a stand to change the culture of their developing players.  They have made several hard decisions, including cutting the funding of a junior who "tanked" his match at the French Open Juniors, in the hope that their "pandered" juniors will toughen up.  Results will not be immediate - but Tennis Australia realises that to make it at the top they must develop the right culture at an early age.
