AUGUST 2009 NEWSLETTER
August means only one thing for tennis fans - the start of the US hard court season, culminating in the US Open at Flushing Meadow at the end of the month. The hard court season is a great time of year with a packed schedule of big events and the big names coming out to play, usually in front of huge and racous crowds.
The ATP tour has hit Montreal for the first of the big lead up "Masters 1000" events. Already Juan Martin del Potro has struck a blow, beating Andy Roddick in the final of the Legg Mason Classic. Both these players shape as huge figures on their favourite surface as the season unfolds. The top four of Federer, Nadal, Murray and Djokiovic will need to be wary.
The girls are in Cincinnati as their preparations for Slam success heats up. Last year Serena won at Flushing Meadow and regained the #1 ranking - a similar storyline seems likely in 2009 as her dominance of the majors continues. Dinara Safina recently won her 3rd title for the year and we hope she can break through for a major victory as a reward for her consistency and to validate her current #1 ranking. She has now been semi finals or better in the past 4 slams.
The US hard court season also marks the return of Rafa - absent since the shock loss at the French Open. Can he step up straight away, the US is the one major he hasn't won. To stop Roger claiming his 6th straight US title and dominance of 2009 would be a mighty effort, never rule the big heart of Nadal but the challenge is more likely to come from another of the top 6.
Another wonderful comeback story is that of the Belgium Kim Clijters. After an absence of 2 years Kim beat a more than handy opponent in Marion Bartoli at Cincinnati to prove her comeback is for real. Kim's return, and that of Martina Hingis and Lindsay Davenport in recent years shows how hard it is for champions to leave the game altogether. Mentally these girls burn out after starting so young on the pro circuit, they sometimes have more to offer, especially if injuries haven't robbed them of their physical gifts.
