AUSTRALIAN OPEN NEWSLETTER
Oh Roger!!! We all felt the pain as Rafa Nadal continued his Grand Slam dominance over Roger Federer at Melbourne Park. The five set classic wasn't quite the same level as the Wimbledon final of 2008, but it had the drama and the momentum swings to keep the crowd thrilled. Again it was a matter of lost opportunities for Federer - who crucially failed to convert break points in the 3rd set as he fell behind 2 sets to 1.
If Federer had been able to take the lead, surely Nadal's extraordinary semi final against Fernado Verdasco would have taken its toll. This 5 hour 14 minute match was the best of the tournament played at a stunning high level. Verdasco belted 93 winners; Nadal just 25 unforced errors. By matches end Nadal had 193 points; Verdasco 192. It gave Nadal the chance to prove he is Federer's kryptonite, leading the Grand Slam final head to head 6 - 1.
While Serene won a tenth slam, perhaps the biggest story of the tournament was the quarter final performance of Jelena Dokic. A top 5 player and Wimbledon semi finalist in the early 2000's, Dokic has been in the tennis wilderness for 6 - 7 years. She became more famous for her fathers antics than her tennis as her life spiralled into decline.
A huge amount of credit must go to Jelena and her current team who have rediscovered a unique tennis talent. By taking Dinara Safina to 3 sets - a match which she could easily have won - she demonstrated a mental strength not possessed by many tour competitors. She won back the Australian crowd with her determined effort and mature and candid reflection of her career to date. By re-entering the top 100 her tournament and prize money opportunities will increase - and most importantly she's got her life back.
