Welcome To The Global Sports Coaching Tennis Journal!
The Global Web site for Tennis Coaching!
Dear Tennis Enthusiast
Issue 19, January 2008
Welcome to 2008, we hope it is a safe and successful year for all our members.

The tennis circuit hits Australia in January with new tennis courts a major discussion point for the first Slam of the Year. The blue courts are certainly eye catching - and positive comments have been made about the speed and bounce of the courts. For spectators it has made tracking the ball a little easier, whether live or on television.
Despite illness shortening his preparation, Roger Federer is the clear favourite - with major challenges from Nadal, Djokovic and Nalbandian expected. Justine Henin had an ideal warm up - winning the Sydney International, but she faces several major hurdles including the Williams Sisters if she is to claim another Grand Slam title.
Please also take the time to visit our home page which has several articles recently added which discuss the special challenges of the Australian Open. This includes articles on Hydration and Nutrition which are particulary important in the Australian summer heat and a preview of the tournament.
Our articles in this months newsletter include :-
- Week 14 of our Lesson Plan Series
- Designing Drills - Federer Style
- Part 7 & 8 of our Speed Training series
We hope you enjoy the newsletter and please keep the feedback coming in, we want to hear what you think of the web site and what you would like to see more of. Send feedback to admin@globalsportscoaching.com

Speed Training for Tennis Players - Strength Training
By David Horne
Strength training is required to help develop a “base” from which an athlete can build upon and become faster. Strength is required before power training and it helps to lay the foundation for overall body conditioning. I have found that strength is the single most dominant factor in predicting and also improving speed. It is not the only factor but it is definitely the main one that can bring about the most significant results. The " 8 Steps to Becoming a Faster Athlete" Include:
- Flexibility
- Strength Training
- Developing a Strong Core
- Power Training
- Developing Explosive Starts
- Reactive Speed / Anticipation
- Agility Training
- Functional Training
This article covers strength and speed training......Read full article>>>>
Eight Steps to Developing Blazing Speed - Core, Posture, Balance
By David Horne
In previous articles I have spoken about core training. This article summarises all key points and how it is a major component involved in speed training development. When an athlete devotes some time to developing and strengthening the core then they are improving their speed. The core plays an important role in balance and stability during sprints. It is also important during the loading phase of plyometric training. As a result this is why strengthening the core precedes power training.
