Welcome To The Global Sports Coaching Tennis Journal!
The Global Web site for Tennis Coaching!
Dear Tennis Enthusiast
Issue 15, September 2007
The last Grand Slam of the year show cased the skills of the two best players and undisputed #1's in the world.
The incomparable Roger Federer defeated the 3rd, 4th and 5th ranked players in the world without dropping a set - although he faced many break points and tight situations. Like the great Sampras before him he seems capable of cruising; and then raising his game at the critical moments. With 12 grand slams in his trophy cabinet, Sampras' record of 14 seems a formality. The only question remains whether he can win the French Open and claim the mantle as best ever.
Justine Henin produced a superb fortnight, culminating in a thrashing of Svetlana Kutznesova in the final. Kutznesova had come through the weaker bottom half of the draw in which the seeds were decimated in the first week. Justine, on the other hand, had to contend with the rejuvenated Williams sisters in consecutive matches. She beat them both in straight sets - the quality of the tennis was very high (particularly against Venus) but her superb all court game prevailed.
The fast US Open courts produced some sensational tennis - highlighted by the superb speed and movement of the players; and the ability to return and neutralise the big serves on a fast court. This months articles reflect these aspects; and are complimented by Week 11 of the GSC lesson plans.

Returning 1st Serves
“THE RETURN OF SERVE” is the most under practiced and under valued shot in the game. You must remember that the server has two attempts to win the point and you as the receiver have one. Hardly fair you might say but that is the rule of tennis so let’s work out how to take the advantage away from the server...read more >>>

This article outlines these factors and provides you with some background in understanding an athlete's speed potential. Read Article: Speed Training - Part 2>>>>
Break these Common Tennis Coaching Habits and Break the Monotony of Your Lessons!
At various times throughout our tennis coaching careers we have all probably been guilty of falling into using the same lesson plan over and over again without realizing that our clients are getting bored with the same drills. As a tennis coach, you must continuously strive to add variety to your workouts by providing new drills, new warm-ups, physical conditioning exercises, lesson themes and so on. It is very easy not to plan a lesson and just go out there without a lesson plan and "Wing it" by making up drills as you go. This can be a common trap for many coaches who coach long hours.
