Eight Steps to Developing Blazing Speed - Reflex Training and Reaction Speed Step 6
By David Horne
An athlete can essentially reprogram their body through repetition. When you perform a specific pattern sequence of a skill that you have learned or practised; you are training your body to become more instinctive in reproducing these movements. As a result of repetition your motor processing system will direct your muscles to contract and produce force in the proper order. What are some of the factors that are involved in training an athlete to become more responsive or react more quickly to a certain situation......

Eight Steps to Developing Blazing Speed - Developing Explosive Starts Step 5
By David Horne
I have included this "Explosive Start" section into the speed development model as this is often one area neglected by athletes. Many sports require the athlete to start from a stationary position as well as trying to achieve to maximum speed while on the run.
If two athletes have similar a speed score when performing the flying 20 speed test, yet one athlete excels over the other athlete when performing speed tests from a stationary position then it is likely that this athlete has a better start. This contributes to his success when it comes to being faster......

Eight Steps to Developing Blazing Speed - Power Training Step 4
By David Horne
Power Training is essential if you wish to become faster! Power training should only be introduced into a training program once the previous steps of flexibility, strength training and core training have been established. This article covers every aspect associated with power training and speed from which exercises you should use, to safety, to how to land correctly when using plyo-boxes, adaptations and much more.

Eight Steps to Developing Blazing Speed - Core, Posture, Balance Step 3
By David Horne
In previous articles I have spoken about core training. This article summarises all key points and how it is a major component involved in speed training development. When an athlete devotes some time to developing and strengthening the core then they are improving their speed. The core plays an important role in balance and stability during sprints. It is also important during the loading phase of plyometric training. As a result this is why strengthening the core precedes power training.

Speed Training for Tennis Players - Strength Training Step 2
By David Horne
Strength training is required to help develop a “base” from which an athlete can build upon and become faster. Strength is required before power training and it helps to lay the foundation for overall body conditioning. I have found that strength is the single most dominant factor in predicting and also improving speed. It is not the only factor but it is definitely the main one that can bring about the most significant results. The " 8 Steps to Becoming a Faster Athlete" Include:
- Flexibility
- Strength Training
- Developing a Strong Core
- Power Training
- Developing Explosive Starts
- Reactive Speed / Anticipation
- Agility Training

Speed Training for Tennis Players - Program Design and Implementation - Part 5
By David Horne (Exercise Physiologist)
For any good speed training program to succeed you must plan and design the appropriate program specific for each player. Program design includes covering periodization, phases of the years (pre, in-season and post season), specificity, variety, overload, progression, consistency, preparation, skill demonstration, assessment..... Speed Training for Tennis Players - Technique - Part 4
By David Horne (Exercise Physiologist)
The majority of sports require the athlete to be able to start from an upright position while a few sports require athletes to start in a three point stance. The obvious sports being track sprinters and American football players. However, many of the tests that are performed at pre-season training camps or college tennis tryouts require the athlete to start from a stationary three point stance. This is not always sport specific but for a number of reasons they carry out tests that require a stationary start. Read full article on speed training >>>>
Speed Training for Tennis Players - Testing for Speed - Part 3
By David Horne
A key part to any good training program is to know the current status of an athlete with regards to their strengths and weaknesses. How fast is the athlete now! How agile is the athlete! What is their reaction time like? Are they fast only over a short distance or do they possess speed-endurance! Does the lack of good flexibility inhibit their ability to become faster? The only way to answer these questions is to perform some pre-season testing. Many coaches perform some form of pre-season testing yet many do not know which tests to choose and which are specific to the fitness component that they are trying to test. Choose tests that are specific to the movements in tennis. This requires performing a needs analysis and understanding the exact requirements for your sport.... Speed Training for Tennis Players - What are the Factors that Determine Speed Potential? - Part 2
By David Horne
We are not all created the same! How true this is. So when it comes to determining your speed potential there are several key factors that can either assist or inhibit your ability to become faster. The key point here is that every athlete can become faster, how fast is just often determined by factors out of our control. This article outlines these factors and provides you with some background in understanding an athlete's speed potential. Read Article: Speed Training - Part 2>>>>
